Earth Day Power Hour

ABOUT

Earth Day Power Hour is a simple way for everyone to make a difference for one hour around Earth Day.

Looking for something to do around Earth Day with your friends, colleagues, or families? Check out our activities page for inspiration!

During April 6th to 24th businesses in the Victoria area are invited to participate in a 'Power Hour' clean up and help freshen up our community. At the end of the day, many people’s small actions can create one large impact. It’s a way to showcase what can be accomplished when communities band together for a common purpose.

We hope  to generate a wonderful sense of accomplishment, community, and social connection from one hour of giving back, across Victoria.

HOW IT STARTED

Like most great things, the Earth Day Power Hour started with a small group of passionate do-ers

ViSTA (Victoria Sustainable Tourism Alliance) founding members, Inn at Laurel Point, Harbour Air Seaplanes, and Eagle Wing Tours have created and been taking part in Earth Day Power Hour for over 10+ years, by choosing a location to pick up refuse and document the number of pieces of trash found. This core group annually submits a challenge to other businesses and locals to join the Power Hour initiative. Over time, it has grown to attract participation by more business teams, schools, and families.

In 2016, Avril Matthews, Director of Marketing and Sales at Inn at Laurel Point, saw an opportunity to expand awareness of the Power Hour by asking the City of Victoria to proclaim it as a formally recognized annual event. On April 14th, 2016, the City of Victoria formally adopted the Earth Day Power Hour.
